The costumes

The English Quadrille have appeared in more than six different costume styles ranging from 1760 to 1914.

Some of the costumes worn by the group have been made by professional costumiers including Suzi Clarke, who also provides help and advice on costume, hairstyles and make-up.

But many members of the group enjoy making their own period ballroom dresses, based on the researches of three members of the group, who are also active in the Costume Society. They have studied the subject over a number of years and own extensive collections of real costumes which are used for study purposes as well as reproductions to wear for performance.

As with the dancing and the music, care is taken to ensure accuracy. The construction, fabric and style of each costume worn by members of the Quadrille is discussed with the group's costume experts and the correct underwear is made before the dressmaking or tailoring of the outer costume commences.
